Team members stayed in two 2 Star guesthouses, and two 2 Star hotels, while in the rural city of A Luoi just miles from the border with Laos. |

Between September 16 and October 2, 2009 a Vets With A Mission thirty-two member volunteer humanitarian medical team traveled to Thua Thein Hue Province, Vietnam. The team served three days at Hong Ha at the Floyd Olsen Memorial Clinic, built in memory of an Army helicopter pilot shot down in this village on April 21, 1968. Two additional days were at A Ngo Health Commune Clinic, and just a half a day at Hong Kim Health Commune Clinic both in A Luoi due to the emergency evacuation of the medical team ordered by the Department of Foreign Affairs because of Typhoon Kentsana.
Specifically the team provided health screenings and other medical care as follows:
- 1,027 patients were seen in 5.5 days, an average of 187 per day.
- 297 optical patients fitted with reading eyeglasses.
- 287 dental patients were treated representing 386 extractions.
- $36,000 was raised by team members and expended through the “Medicine & Patient Services Fund” for surgeries ($17000), Medicine ($8760), Hospitalizations/Tets ($4650), Hotel/Transport/Meal stipends ($1690), Rice & Noodles distribution ($900) and $3,000 deposited in the 2010 Medicine & Patient Services Fund.
- 1 hemorrhoid, Achilles tendon, Hernia, & tongue surgery.
- 10 canes, 9 walkers, and 8 wheelchairs were given away.
- 2 cataract operations and 1 hearing aid sponsored.
- 5 heart surgeries and 3 cardiac evaluations sponsored.
- 3 Thyroid, 2 Goiter, 1 leg and 1 foot surgery sponsored.
- 5 special cases referred to Hue Central Hospital.
- 7 minor surgeries performed “on-site.”
- Each patient seen received a prescription filled “free” as well as personal toiletries, toothpaste/toothbrush, and other items.
- $100 given to the staff of A Ngo Health Commune Clinic and the People’s Committee to meet special needs.
- Hong Ha Kindergarten given $100; 108 pencils, pens and toothbrushes/toothpaste; clothes and toys.
- Hong Ha Health Clinic (FOMC), A Ngo Health Commune Clinic, and Hong Kim Health Commune Clinic were each given $750 in medical supplies and medicine.
- Provided emergency cash stipends for transportation and/or medicine, and noodles/rice food stipends for 17 poor and needy families.
