Served with 137th eng. sept 70 to sept 71. dozer operator out of chu lai. blown up south of danang Feb 13, 71 Looking for any buddies. Cant rem all but there was a todd smeltzer, alva stacy, Sgt pugh, bobby meyers, dietz, ing or eng from orderly room seemed to run the whole company, Finished my military service at Ft Dix when some senetors son or something dropped dead and the shit came down that you couldnt even look at the trainees funny. There was an open door policy for the cruits. I know cause it cost me an Art. 15 thanks to Col. Barrarre. Also I had been thinking about re up but after that what for.. Been excavating since the day I got discharged. Also in Nam there was a Joe Cherry and a shovel operator that could play guitar. Platoon Sgt Brandt, Alva stacy was a grader operator and he and I got a speeding ticket on the grader for comming down chu lai hill too .fast on the grader. I once did a foolish thing by driving my D7E back to camp un escorted between Tam Key and Tein phuoc near the notorious fish hook. At a fire base the pedaprime tanker was parked too close and the windshield popped out during a fireing mission. Does any of this ring a bell for anyone? Back to fort dix, was stationed in the old wooden barracks on the way to the ranges. Remember Sgt William Hunter {"yolanda, do your eyes"}, Capt Calvin R. Rheam {who liked my blue and gold javelin}, Sgt Giaont, Sgt Weston who worked a side job in Ginos or McDonalds, and field first Joe Whitehead, what a soldier! Oh yes Preston, who was a clerk in the orderly room, took me for some cash the day he got discharged. When I worked the supply room, any one remember the nignt a certain Pvt attempted to steal a M-16? Cooks Frenchy, Grigsby, and the cook that broke into my room and boosted my stereo while I was on CQ. Briefly played softball, 3rd base, catcher was another cook. At the end of my service, field first was a Sgt jackson, maybe, He had a pair of beautiful Boxer dogs. Also had basic at Ft Dix, Mar 70, A 2 2 under Sgt Grant Fox. Capt was into himself, reminded me of Sammy Davis Jr. with a spit shine. I apologize for not remembering everyone, but it was a great experience, and I believe it helped make me who I am today.

I was assigned to the 5/42 artillery and was detailed to the 2/32 just in time for the attacks on FSB Pace in September 1971. I was a ground radar op. Who was the Warrant Officer in the 2/32 who supervised the ground radar operations at FSB Pace? He awarded me the Bronze Star.

My tour of duty in Vietnam was from March 1970 - March 1971 in Long Binh. I was a Staff Sgt in the Class I yard and in charge of the NAF Section. During my tour at Long Binh it was a fairly safe area, just a few alerts of incoming now and then but luckily it never came, and for that I am grateful. The whole of Vietnam was considered a war zone but I was never in a battle, again grateful. I had a supply MOS and therefore I was classified as a non-combatant. I was a support troop. I believe that technically we were all prepared to be combatants should the need arrive, after all we were all basically trained for defense of our country. We swore an oath. Supply, Transportation, Communications, Medical, Mess, Administrative Personnel, and all support troops are ready to take up arms when called upon in defense of our country as was the case in Vietnam and past wars.
I went to Vietnam to support ALL of our troops, and that, I did to the best of my ability. I have nothing to be ashamed of. Had I been called upon for combat duty I would have been extremely proud to serve. I wouldn't have been too unfamiliar with the duties of a combat soldier although it had been a few years since I was a grunt.
I served as an 0311 with Marine Regiments and Fleet Marine Force Pacific Divisions during my tour with the Marine Corps from 1954 - 1958. (Peace time but nevertheless excellent training). As it turned out I later joined the Army in 1958 and was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division for a while. I then transfered to the Quartermaster Corp and went to Vietnam and was assigned to the 506th S&S Company.
I am very proud and thankful to ALL of our Vietnam Vets combat and support troops for there service and sacrifices. They let it be known that the United States Armed Forces are Forces to be reckoned with. Again, I am proud of my service in Vietnam.
